Theme: GREED

Text: “And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words but they will not do them: for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness”   – Ezekiel 33:31

Comment: The text for today shows how people have to congregate or assemble in places of worship to listen to the word of God being preached but at the end of such services, still continue in their greedy and covetous ways of life. We should however, do what we hear  St Paul advised “Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.” (Hebrews 2:1) Apostle James spells out the matter even more graphically, when he wrote, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” (James 1:22-25) It is therefore not enough to hear sermons or to read the Bible; we have to do what we read and hear from the word of God. “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” – Revelation 1:3.
