Theme: THE DANGER OF HYPOCRISY

Text: “Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.” – Matthew 23:1-3.

Comment: Upholding some of the commandments of God as taught by Moses the prophet, Jesus Christ told his disciples that whatsoever is in accordance with the will of God, they should “observe and do”. In modern times, people will say dwell on the message, not the messenger, because the scribes and the Pharisees were duplicitous. Their lives did not correspond with their teachings. They were engrossed in ceremonies like washing of hands, cleansing of plates, cups, cutlery, salutations, etc., but in practice of the commandments of God, they were weak. For example, they brought an adulterous woman to Christ (John 8:4) and by the law of Moses, death was the penalty. (Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:22) Christ did not sentence the poor woman to death as the hypocrites wanted him to do; rather he gave her a second chance by asking her to go and sin no more. – John 8:5-11.
