Theme: Wilful Idleness And Willing Workers

Text: “Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.” – Hebrews 4:11.

Comment: The Holy Bible teaches of the ‘eternal rest’ that worshippers of God will be ushered into as reward for their labour just as the Lord rested on the 7th day after his works of creation. See Hebrews 4:9,10. However, ecclesiastical records show that the natural Jews were notorious for the display of unbelief notwithstanding the numerous miraculous works from the Lord which they witnessed while journeying from Egypt to the promised land. Today, similar display of unbelief is prevalent among many who profess the Christian faith. The text under reference admonishes worshippers of God to labour in sincerity in order to enter into the everlasting rest which God has prepared for them who love him (1 Corinthians 2:9).

The ‘labour’ spoken of in the text for today is simply the constant practice of righteousness. St Peter exhorts to wit, “And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; And to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” – 2 Peter 1:5-8,

10,11. See also Hebrews 11:4-13.
