Theme: WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A CHRISTIAN
Text: “He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.” – Matthew 10:37, 38.
Comment: To be a Christian indeed requires a lot of sacrifice. Under no circumstance should we allow human or worldly considerations to override the demands of Jesus Christ our Master. If the wishes of our parents, husbands, wives, relatives or friends are in conflict with the requirements of true Christianity, we must at all times abandon the wishes of men and cleave to the Lord. (Acts 5:29) The “cross” that a Christian is required to bear is not a golden or wooden instrument nor a piece of brass or copper but the self-denial we must demonstrate in our service to God and to deny ourselves of worldly pleasure. (1 John 2:15-17) Apostle Paul talked of himself as a prisoner of Christ. (Ephesians 3:1; Philemon 1:1, 9) That is, by virtue of his calling, he was not free to do as he liked but submit himself to the will of God, not to sin. (Romans 6:14-16) True Christians should adopt this attitude as being prisoners of Christ and be ready to suffer for the sake of Christ. – Philippians 1:29. See also 1 Peter 4:12-16.
