Theme: THE DANGER OF HYPOCRISY

Text: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.” – Matthew 23:15.

Comment: To “compass sea and land” is an expression which means to leave no stone unturned; using all in one’s arsenal to win converts to their sect. A proselyte is a stranger or outsider who dwells in a foreign land. A “child of hell” is a Hebrew phrase for an extremely wicked person. Christ deplored their penchant for getting more people into their ranks and make them worse than before their conversion to the Jewish religion. It was not worth the time to strain every sinew to persuade new converts to their side; and afterwards abandon them to their fate with no moral, religious education to build them up. These slippery Pharisees prevented the people from hearing the gospel message by maintaining the Mosaic institutions and kept them away from believing in the Kingdom of God. – Matthew 23:13.
