Text: “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” – 1 Timothy 6:10.
Comment: Judas Iscariot was a man who loved money and coveted it. (John 12:4-6, Matthew 26:14-16) His covetousness made him steal, and eventually betray his Master. Truly, covetousness is the motivation for other vices like murder, fraud, robbery, kidnapping, bribery, perjury, extortion, etc. It is associated with spiritual barrenness and insensitivity to the needs of others. Judas’ actions were to his spiritual detriment; it led to his fall from the Faith and to a sorrowful end. (Matthew 27:1-9) Yes, a “fool’s end” awaits all who are covetous. The way out is for one to have the spirit of God which will enable the worshipper to practise godliness, contentment, faithfulness, and charity. – 1 Timothy 4:7; 6:6, 7, 11, 17-19.
