Theme: DISCIPLINE

Text: “Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.” – 1 Samuel 15:3.

Comment: The text for today was the directive given to Saul, the king of Israel, which he could not accomplish due to indiscipline. Rather than obey the voice of the LORD, he listened to the people (1 Samuel 15:15) and transgressed the instruction of the LORD. The consequence of this rebellious act was that he was deposed of the throne as king of Israel. (1 Samuel 15:22-24) It follows that for one to obey the commandments of God, discipline is required. God told the Jews: “Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons;” – Deuteronomy 4:9. See also Proverbs 3:1, 3; 4:23.
