Theme: REPENTANCE

Text: “And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, let neither man nor beast, herd or flock, taste anything: let them not feed, nor drink water: But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn everyone from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.” – Jonah 3:7,8

Comment: Nineveh, a fortified, great and rich city, was involved in wicked practices. When God Almighty sent Jonah to warn them of the evil to come in forty days’ time, they “believed God, and proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them” (Jonah 3:5). “They turned from their evil way and God repented of the evil, that he had said he would do unto them, and he did it not”. (Jonah 3:10). As we continue to hear God’s words from time to time, it is important for us to be sensitive to them and be understanding of them, so that our hearts shall constantly be pricked to trigger genuine repentance in all areas we find we have fallen short, by God’s grace. The people of Nineveh fulfilled all the requirements for God’s forgiveness as elaborated in 2 Chronicles 7:14 which states: “If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, pray,  and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” This promise of God will fulfill on all repentant sinners by His grace.
